Category for Bümpliz, Bern / parallel language categories

Hello,

I have some closely related questions regarding location categories, and need advise regarding Bümpliz.

1) Bümpliz was separate from Bern (Stadt) for a long time. [edit 2023-08-23 12:30 - It didn't become part of Bern city until the 20th century, see Bümpliz – Wikipedia] Should a separate location category be created and used for earlier profiles? Or should profiles associated with Bümpliz be categorized with Bern (Stadt)?

2) Why is there no |fr|de|en|it| selection for the Canton of Bern category page, but only the name as link in the first three languages? (related to this, how are parallel language categories created?) [EDIT 2023-08-23 12:30 - I found an explanation of the AKA template, which answered this part of my question. It suggests that no one has yet created an Italian version of this :category location page, or forgot to add the corresponding AKA template, if they did.]

3) Some location categories have a "timeline" feature, which seems similar to the "parallel language" feature. How is that accomplished? [EDIT 2023-08-23 15:30 - ANSWERED below. THANKS!]

4) [Edit 2023-08-23 12:40 - separate point, re-phrased] Would it be possible to have profiles associated with ALL time-dependent parallel categories (selectable via timeline) displayed in appropriate sub-sections of the :category location page?

I created the category for Bümpliz: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:B%C3%BCmpliz%2C_Bern
I added all profiles that I could find in WikiTree+.

I hope the setup of the category makes sense. It is now a mix between "not a municipality anymore" and "is still a quarter" of the city of Bern. I added the timeframe date, as probably only profiles in that timeframe will have the location Bümpliz in the sources. Later official sources would only have the municipality of Bern as location.

Looks good! Thanks for all the work you put in to getting these location categories up and running!

Hi GM

1) I would also need the Bümpliz location category for some profiles. But as we didn't resolved the question about how (and from when) the location name should be chosen, I didn't create it yet.

2) I found this page, the proposed Canton categories by the categorization project: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Swiss_cantons
I think, this page will solve a part of our questions, because it links the categories of the cantons in their main speaking language. Eg. Canton of Tessin only has English and Italian (Italian beeing their only language spoken), while Canton of Berne has English, French and German (with French and German being spoken). So the category for Canton of Berne should not be created in Italian.

3) For timelines, add those lines inside a CategoryInfoBox:
|succ1text= Timeline
|succ1next=
|startdate =
|enddate=
See example: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Castelmonardo%2C_Vibo_Valentia

But we would need to decide first in the Switzerland project, if timelines in location categories should be used or not.
As mentioned, I don't really see a big advantage in them, because of 4).

4) The aka-template mirrors the other respective categories, so if I add the location category of "Canton of Berne" (English), the profile will also be shown in the respective categories of German and French.
This is not the case with timelines. Timelines a) produce a database suggestion in WikiTree, if an unfitting profiles is placed in this category (eg. if you add a profile from 20th century to a category with "enddate=1700"), and b) if there is a category in "succ1next=" (there's also a "before", but I would need to look it up), it will create a link to this category inside the CategoryInfoBox. So each category with a timline remains a single category, the profiles in each of those categories are not shown in another one.

Hi I,

I'm not sure I understand (4) - but I think your main concern was that the individual profiles are only displayed on the specific (time-limited) category page, and we would prefer that all profiles that are related to a specific place can be displayed on ONE category page for that place, regardless of what the place was called historically. My thought was, that if there was some sort of "master" location category (like in aka templates), that all of the "time-limited" location categories for the same place used in their CIB, then it SHOULD be technically possible to display all profiles linked (via the correct historical category) to the "master" location category page - maybe grouped in subsections which identified the historically correct name and the dates it was valid...
Hi GM,
There is no "master" category for timelines :-( . If so, that would be a good way to go, but unfortunately that's not how it works.
That is unfortunate.

I will have to look more closely at the "CategoryInfoBox" concept. Do you know someone who is an expert on them?
I don't know who might be an expert in the CIB, maybe someone from the categorization project?

What are your questions?
Hello I,
I am sure that you are correct that there is no worldwide "master" category for timelines.
I like the concept. I think that every regional project should have a description of timelines in their category guidelines. My concern is that most projects have different rules for location and migration categories.

I think I found a solution for a possible Bümpliz location category, see other topic.
"it wouldn't be about the historical municipality before merging Bümpliz to the city of Berne, but rather creating a category for a location that is "smaller" than the municipality.

Now let's see what other members say, as it also is just a suggestion.

This idea sounds good to me. The location category structure of a city inside a municipality is easy to understand.
