From Amy Johnson Crow: Week 42

The theme for Week 42 is "Friends." We all get by with a little (or a lot) of help from our friends. What about the friends of your ancestors? What about a friend who has helped you with your genealogy?

I know this episode. It's "The One with the 52 Ancestors Prompt"!

Sometimes you end up locking horns with a good friend. Weird, right? https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2023/10/52-ancestors-week-42-friends.html

I've been told you are judged by the company you keep. Researching connections from the Civil War is where my genealogy trail began, one rabbit hole at a time, one rabbit whole after another. James Overton Hinde shows up as a husband of two of my 3x's great aunts, who were sisters. A James Hind/Hines also shows up on a roster of Quantrill's Partisan Rangers. After a year and a half of discoveries I arrived at his g g grandfather, Dr Thomas Hinde. Thomas is a notable. In reading his Wikipedia page I saw names of my forefathers in Hubbard and Taylor. From there, the list of friends read as a who's who. In writing this post, I have looked up a name, Philip Pendleton Barbour noted in Hinde's Wikipedia profile (notable without a profile) who is more than likely a relative to my Unknown Barbour grandmother. In his Wikipedia page, I see more familiar names in Clay, Madison, Duvall and Pendleton. It seems my forefathers were all acquainted and their offspring even more so.

My 7th great grandfather, Hopestill Bent, http://wikitree.com/wiki/Bent-154, was memorable to me because he formed a friendship with Isaac Nehemiah, an Indian from Natick, Province of Massachusetts Bay.  Isaac, who was ill, had lived in Hopestill's home for seven years and during that time was cared for by Hopestill.  In April 1714 Isaac gifted a deed of his lands in Natick and Magunckob to Hopestill in appreciation. Profile managers Allen Warner and Blanche Cunningham have done a fine job with Hopestill Bent's profile.  Unfortunately Isaac Nehemiah is not yet in WikiTree.

The relatives I met through family history research who became good friends.

Almost all through Ancestry, as my family history is all in England and most family branches were not represented on WT before I added the profiles.

My 1C1R Robin who has found several missing people through DNA research.

My cousin Lindsay, I think we decided we are 3C 2R, who lives in Adelaide, Australia, he has done some exceptional work on our shared ancestors in Shropshire, England in the 1600s.

My DH's 4C1R Cousin Sharon who lives on Vancouver Island and has been doing some significant research for my Alton Cemetery project, she and my DH share a large number of ancestors and other relatives.

I can't resist this post to document my current friends. I know it isn't the purpose of the post, but who could resist?

I am moving from Alabama to Utah with a limited budget, so what did my Red Hatter club members do? Came over and packed all my books including all my genealogy books. These ladies are in their 60s-80s and we ended up with 26 book cartons. Then they volunteered their husbands to come over and break down the bookcases.  That is love. One at a time they've been over to help me with other packing.

My paternal grandparents (Gunn-1707 and Meacham-526) friends read like a "Who's Who" of the early 20th century.  It included

Egyptologists Alan Gardiner (who was also my grandfather's literary executor), Leonard Woolley (my father, as a small boy, was disappointed that he wasn't "wooly"), Margaret Murray (who was also the originator of the theory that medieval "witches" were a vestige of a pre-Christian, pagan religion), Flinders Petrie, T.E.Peet, Howard Carter (he wrote a letter to Jack about the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb), Horace H.F. Jayne (museum director).

Fabians H.G. Wells, Amber Reeves, G.B. Shaw, Beatrice and Sidney Webb.

Artists Clifford Bax (music), Eric Gill (sculptor and font creator, he had at least one affair with my grandmother), Florence Farr (actress), William Butler Yeats (author), Arthur Pinero (playwright).

Allan Bennett (English Buddhist).

Occultists Aleister Crowley, Arthur Waite (creator of the modern Tarot deck).

Psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, and Sandor Firenczi.

This is a photo taken in Illinois about 1905 of my grandmother Pearl McCleery and her three girlfriends. My grandmother is lower left, and the two girls on the right are sisters. My grandmother kept an album of her life in Illinois and her friends there. Her father decided to move to Oklahoma in 1907. Her mother had died, and he did not want her to marry and not be around to help him raise her two younger brothers. My grandmother truly missed her life in Illinois, and she often took trips back to visit her friends. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McCleery-119

The other three all look like sisters. Triplette's even.
Thank you a Alexis for sharing this gorgeous photo they all look adorable
K., thank you for your nice comment. I do wish that my grandmother had written their names on the photos. I do know that the girl top right is also named Pearl.
Susan, thank you for the sweet comment. I actually have the pin and watch that is pined on my grandmother’s dress. She was good to save things for me to have.
What a marvelous picture, Alexis.  Look at the hairstyles and dresses.  All those high collars.  I so enjoy you photos.  What a grand collection you have.
Pat, thank you for your lovely comment.  I feel the same way about your photos.

When I thought today of the topic "Friends", I got the earworm Friends will be friends of Queen. I know Freddie Mercury is still unconnected, but he is a challenging person to connect. So I googled a bit further. So Quakers are called "Friends"? Okay.... Hmmm all the profiles I find are so early in early USA that it's not worth it to look for not connected profiles. But I looked further in the religious categories and found the profile of Ida (Bell) Robinson who was still unconnected. She isn't anymore, I was able to connect her via her sister-in-law to an ancestor of Laura.

I need better friends, since none of my friends have been bitten by the genealogy bug.  My first resource was a cousin (I think once removed). There was a big family reunion regularly, and he would share his latest family news for my great-grandfather's family, Crocker.

S01E42: "The One with the Restaurant"

Here are my great-grandparents Willy and Luz Antonia, around 1935, with their friends Eliecer and Glafira. They helped them set up and prepare the "Schopp Antofagasta" restaurant in Tocopilla, Chile for its opening.

My grandfather Guillermo and his brother Erwin are the little boys. Luz and Glafira are on the second floor balcony, where the family house was.
