Bug: Email address validation

When I edit my own account https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:EditPerson I set a valid email address "test+wikitree@gmail.com", but once I try to save the changes, 2 bad things happen: 

• I get a message saying: "Sorry, the e-mail address does not look valid. A valid e-mail address is required for Vojta to login." Having a plus sign in an email address is valid (and it helps me to sort messages in my inbox). So it is a bug that such email address is not accepted. 
• The email address in the input field changes to "test wikitree@gmail.com" (plus sign is replaced with a space). Replacing the plus sign with a space sign looks like a bug in escaping and it smells like there could be url-decode used somewhere where it should not be used.

We don't accept emails with "+" signs, as they were being abused by vandals and people signing up for multiple accounts.

Disallowed characters are stripped from profile fields -- I'll have to double-check the email field to make sure this is what is happening here.
