Sources for Major Tyler refer to him as Major, what is the source for John?

All the sources I have found for Major Tyler only use the name Major.  I am wondering where you have found a source referring to him as John.

Looking at the Connecticut Nutmegger article linked on that profile, I think Major Tyler (born 1754), who is presumed to be the son of John Tyler and Sarah Meade (pages 105, 108), has been conflated with John Tyler (born 1748) who is a documented son of that couple (page 107).
