Did Sir William Keith (1389-1464) marry Marjorie Fraser?

I removed Marjorie Fraser (Fraser-483) as a wife of Sir William Keith (Keith-313). because Marjorie's mother appears to be William Keith's sister.  One of the profile managers is not so sure that Marjorie is his niece, and prefers to leave her as a wife.

Sources seem sketchy and sometimes contradictory, saying that he married Mary Hamilton in 1414 and others saying that he married Marjorie Fraser in 1414.  Any recommendations?

It looks like the issue is much more complex.

Although the first wife of Alexander Fraser of Lovat is named Elizabeth Keith, there seems to be no sources that name her family or connections.  His second wife, was Marion Keith, the daughter of Sir Robert Keith and sister of William Keith.  See The Scots Peerage, Vol. 5, p. 521.  It would be fairly unusual for there to be no mention of the fact that Elizabeth and Marion were sisters it that was the case.

The Scots Peerage in that volume does state that Alexander's daughter, Marjorie did marry William Keith, and also in Volume 6, page 40 that there was a commission to grant dispensation of the marriage issued on 26 April 1414.

However The Complete Peerage, 2nd ed., Vol. 8, states that if the marriage did take place, then there was another wife named Mary or Mariota before 1436 who was the mother of his eldest son Sir Robert Keith and probably of the rest of his children.  Mary died on or before 1442.

This parents of Mary are unknown, although The Scots Peerage (Vol 6 again) does say that she is "usually said to have been the daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Cadzow but there is no evidence for this and the dates make it doubtful"

It's unfortunate that the only source already on most of these profiles is from thePeerage.com, and the only source used on that website is Burke's Peerage and that isn't a good source for the medieval period.

Thanks John,

Using Occam's razor, the simplest solution seems to be that William Keith first married in 1414 to Marjorie Fraser (who was somehow related to him since a dispensation was required before marriage).  And she probably died sometime before about 1420 and he married Mary Hamilton who started producing children, the eldest son Robert perhaps born about 1420.

The second wife supposedly died in early in 1442.  And as I stated in the revised wikitree biography of William Keith, he soon after issued a charter in 1442 naming eldest son Robert as his heir.  But Robert died in 1446, so second son William II became the successor in 1464 when William died.

According to The Complete Peerage, his son Robert was still  under age on 28 October 1444 citing Registrum magni sigilli regum Scotorum or The Register of the Great Seal of Scotland 1306-1668, page 62, no. 276

Which Google translate tells me is the section Rob. ipso non attingente suam legitimam etatem ...

Therefore he was born later than 1420.  If underage is younger than 21, then he could have been born 1425 or later?
