The FAG memorial suggests that her maiden name was Thompson.  I'm uncertain at this point.

This is what I believe so far:

Her first husband was Mr. Kelley (m. abt 1884-1899).  Her last husband was Mr. Smith (possibly my long lost gr,gr-grandfather).  There could have been a Mr. Thompson in between.

My question is:  Is it likely that her name would appear on her grave marker as it is, if her maiden name was in fact Thompson?  Or is Thompson most likely a 2nd husband?

The way her name is on the FAG memorial suggests to me that her maiden name was Thompson.  But I am not sure if it would have been engraved that way if that were the case.

I have not created her profile since I am unsure of LNAB.  The profile attached is Mr. Smith (I think).

Here is the FAG link:

Would appreciate any thoughts!

You can get photostat reproductions from regular Ancestry.

I use the library Ancestry because I need my money for cigars and coffee. ; )
So, am I to understand that the records on that site can also be found on Ancestry?  It looks that way.
Grave markers are usually where I start my research on my ancestors. In most cases, from my personal experience, a woman's maiden name is not engraved on the markers. Usually her married surname is on the marker. Regarding what Tom said above, the name Marian though it does seem to be a female name but Marian is also a Czech male name so it is possible that maybe his family used the Czech/male version of the name. Its uncommon for Marian spelled as it is to be a male's name but not unlikely. Also, on FindAGrave, I believe the female's maiden name, if known, is italicized.

Hopefully that helped a little at least. Have a lovely day and best of luck researching!
Thank you, Kali ~

I've learned that her maiden name was Gibson.  As you stated, it was not engraved on the stone (except for G.).

But the name Thompson was italicized.  That threw me at first.  Must be a mistake.
Marian can be male or female - it was John Wayne's real given name.
Thank you, Gillian ~

In this case it is male.  Perhaps it is a place name.
If you are positive her maiden name was Gibson, i can correct it for you on Find A Grave.

Carolyn ~

I haven't found her family for certain yet.  But her son's record lists his mother as Margaret Gibson and his father as Francis Marian Kelley.  And she was married to a Thompson the second time, so her maiden name isn't Thompson.

I think it is safe to name her Gibson at this point.

Here is a possible family for her:

"United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4GW-139 : 11 August 2016), Margarette Gibson in household of Joseph Gibson, Beat 2 Watts, Covington, Mississippi, United States; citing enumeration district ED 123, sheet 307D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 0646; FHL microfilm 1,254,646.

Thank you!

I changed the maiden name and put a note on the memorial about three husbands.
Thank you, Carolyn!

Do I need a library card to access that death certificate?  Looks like the info may be a fit.

Maybe she married Mr Thompson AFTER Mr Smith?

      Thank you, Ros ~

That is another possibility.  I assumed that Smith was her name at time of death and I believe this is her with Mr. Smith in 1930.

      1930 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XMBL-BP4

And from the questions asked and answered on the census, Mr. Smith was not her first husband.

I know a lot of my people had their first name, middle name(if applicable,) LNAB, then their married name.

For example: My great-great-grandmother was Eva Ellen Creech Blackman. But I think on her tombstone, it says Eva Creech Blackman.

In your case, the G after Margaret could be an indication that her maiden name was something that started with a G.

That's what I think too.  And Thompson may be from another marriage if not her maiden name.
