this is fascinating - when I found my first Scottish ancestor I tried to read a history of the land - so many wars! Will try and slog through this looking for clues on my "brick wall" William Sinclair that was born in 1788

Many thanks indeed for posting the link. Great resource. I have someone in my tree who is supposedly descended from the Earls or Orkney so will be interested to see if I can find any reference to her.
