Edward James Francis' mother's maiden name was Mason (from birth registration https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp)

From the 1881 Census, Edward James' is with his father Edward and step-mother Juliet nee Richards who were married 27th May 1875 at St. Michael's, South Hackney - Edward's father was Nathaniel Draper Francis (Coal Merchant)

Thank you so much. That is so helpful.
It looks like Edward Francis married Mary Ann Mason in 1862 in the Clerkenwell registration district, but I can't seem to find an image of the actual marriage.
Mary Ann probably died in childbirth, as in 1871 Edward senior was widowed and his youngest child Percy was just 3 months old - and Mary Ann's death is registered in the March quarter of 1871 Hackney Registration District Vol 1b Pg 311 Aged 30 years old
Edward Francis senior was born 10th January 1839, the son of Nathaniel Draper Francis ( Vullum Binder) & Elizabeth Francis, of Haberdasher Street. Baptised 14th August 1842 at  St. John the Baptist, Hoxton, Middlesex https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1558/31280_195048-00452?pid=1755960&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db%3DLMAbirths%26h%3D1755960%26indiv%3Dtry%26o_vc%3DRecord:OtherRecord%26rhSource%3D7619&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true
There are a lot of Mary Ann Masons born about 1841 so you would need to order the marriage certificate to identify her father's name & occupation to be able to pin point her in the 1861 census
Thanks Michelle. That is so helpful
