Family Tree Building

I am currently pretty new to the web page, my tree being on pieces of paper kept neatly in a file, but after a house fire which destroyed the downstairs level of the house, I decided I need to start putting it were it will be accessible for years to come, should something happen. My problem is I have bits and pieces of the family tree, I mainly have names but not many dates, so I have been trying to build with approx. dates just to get things going.  Should I rather wait until I have the dates before I build, or should I build and then go back and edit.  Could anyone help with sites to research that do not cost an arm and a leg.

Hi Michelle,

So sorry to hear about the fire, hope everyone escaped unharmed :)

Family search is free but you need to make a free account.

General Record Office also free to search with a free account (G.B)

Free BMD another free site for basic birth marriage and death records.(G.B)

You can make a guess at dates but please do go back and change them if you find they are different :) It is better to search first if you can :)

Hope this helps a little, Good luck :)

Hi Wendy, does your G.B. stand for Great Britain
Yes it does Rodney, sorry, I was racing a refresh  to get it typed in. I did have England in there originally (In full) but then spotted it had Welsh names in the listings and the General Record Office will hold all.
thank-you

Welcome to WikiTree Michelle!  You have come to the right site to preserve your work for future generations.  Before you begin recording information on the site, I suggest reading How to Get Started with Genealogy for some helpful tips. For example, one tip that many of us use is to search online using FamilySearch, which is completely free.  That site will help you to locate sources for the information you have already collected.  It also will provide you with the correct format for listing the source on this site, which will make it easy for the rest of us to follow your work.

I hope this helps you to get started. Please come back with any other questions that you have.
