While searching pension files from National Archive, NATF Form 85 states that only Federal soldier records are held at National Archives.
My subject (Lewis-21521) fought side-by-side w federal union soldiers but joined as volunteer in Iowa, serving as follows:
Lewis, John Dempster. Age 19. Residence Farmington, nativity Ohio. Enlisted February 12, 1863. Mustered February 19, 1863. Promoted Eighth Corporal March 1, 1865. Transferred to Company A, Seventh Cavalry Reorganized.
Pension Index card contains dates of application for soldier (27 Apr 1891) and for widow (22 Mar 1901), with soldier application # (1016264) & soldier certificate (708094) and widow application # (738029) & widow certificate (547513).
Am I to understand that NATF Form 85 is saying even if a pension was approved for this soldier/widow, the records will not be found at the National Archives?
