I have read that Polly Read Elder was a cousin of George Washington.

Question

If this is true that she was a cousin of George Washington, I'd love to see the proven connection. Polly and David Elder were my husband's 6x grands.

I have a page out of an old Elder family Bible that states that Polly Read was the first cousin of GW.  It contains some of their genealogy.  Her father was William Reade .   They were in Brunswick county VA when Polly married David Elder.  That is a burned out county and records are scarce.  Polly and David are my 4th grands.  Lula Tuttle Sinnott

Brunswick County, Virginia is not a burned out county.  Brunswick county, Virginia has lost some records; however, there are a lot of records still in existence and available for research.  I will not list all of the records available but Family Search has available to search the following Brunswick County, Virginia records: Court Orders book 1732 to 1904; Minute Books 1824 to 1835; Plea's 1816 to 1818 and 1842 and 1852.  Deeds 1732 to 1869 and Index to deeds 1732 to 1881; Tax list 1782 to 1849; Processioners returns 1795 to 1816; St. Andrews Parish Vestry Book 1732 to 1797; Wills 1732 to 1925 and Index to Wills 1732 to 1948.  The Virginia State Library in Richmond has more microfilm records for Brunswick county, Virginia.

Re:  Brunswick co.  Thank you Carol, for your input, and resources.  Unfortunately, at my age,I am no longer able to engage in a lot of research.  I was told this info by two sources, a professional researcher who did get some info for me, and a researcher at the DAR Library in D.C. on one of my research visits  there, the same thing...the. Blue made a sweep through there and burned many court houses... I have a number of documents, deeds etc. for the couple.  I do have the proof of David’s marriages to Polly Reade and Polly Phillips. What I want is hard copy proof of David Elder’s service in the revolution.  If you can point me to that you would have my undying gratitude.   Lula Tuttle Sinnott

Hi Frank,  I have an Elder cousin who had a researcher in Virginia document our side (David and Mary Hill Reade) of the Elder family and he has the genealogy proving this through her father, William Reade.   He is long since. Deceased and I have very little of his info., just what is in an Elder genealogy book I ordered from an Elder man in Texas who compiled it over many years.  Lula Tuttle Sinnott
