I am an Eckenrod and I have hit a brick wall concerning my grandfather Chester Clay Eckenrod. 1910 census states father is Samuel.  MyHeritage Family Tree states: Henry Hubert Eckenrod 1881-1964 (Chester slibing) born to Silas J Eckenrod and Lucinda C Eckenrod (Rhodes). Need a birth certificate for Chester Clay Eckenrod in hopes his father FULL name is on there. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Carolyn!  Welcome to WikiTree!

You are very wise to question the conflicting info in other people's unsourced family tree projects, and to want to get a few actual sources to confirm.

Could i suggest that you could do one thing to help us help you - make a profile for Chester Clay Eckenrod, put everything you do actually know about him, and then edit your question to include his WikiTree ID in the field for that at the bottom of the question.

That will really help those of us who want to help you grow our tree!  It will also automatically put a link on Chester's profile to this question, so that the discussion which ensues will be available later to anyone looking at his profile.

Hope i explained that clearly enough! Let me know whether it makes any sense to you...

Cheers

My grandfather Chester Clay Eckenrod married Ada May Richardson and they had several children, one of the sons is Chester Raymond.  I'm fairly new at this and need all the help I can get.

One question is the ID# G2G

Thanks

Yes I believe this is my Chester. I have all census records except 1890.  The conflict I am having is this: Is his father Samuel Silas Eckenroad or Silas J Eckenrod/Eckenroad.  This is why I'm trying to locate Chester Clay birth certificate.  Both of these men cannot father the same children.  :)  There are so many Silas Eckenrod's without a middle names.
Hi Carolyn!  to get an ID number, you need to create a profile. Go to the top RH corner of your screen, where is says:

'My WikiTree'    'Add'    'Find'      'Help'

Click on 'Add' to get the dropdown. The items are in alphabetical order.

Then choose New Person

Just put what you do know so far.  Sometimes it is best to build a strong base with the generations we know before moving back in time.
Silas J Eckenrod who married Annie Elizabeth and later a Susan is not yours--he and his family are in a different town for several censuses.
That's why it is helpful to gather all the info you do know about the more recent generations.  Catch them on all the censuses that they should be on, and find the birth records of as many siblings as possible.  That way, when you run into another family with a similar name, you will know whether it is possible to be the right family or not.
An even better way to make a profile for Chester is to first go to your own profile and add your father as your father.  After you have sketched out the profile for him, add his father, who is Chester.  That way you will not only have a profile for Chester, you will have the relationships established.

Of course you can always link the relationships afterwards, just by putting in the WikiTree ID.
My intuition is telling me that the name Samuel connected to Silas Eckenrod is an anomaly -  a misunderstanding by the census taker (or the informant, who could have been a neighbour) in either the name or the relationship, or actually a different person with the relationship misunderstood. There are several sources indicating Silas as Chester's dad, but so far i don't see any other reference to a Samuel with this family.

The purpose of the census was not for our later family history efforts, so they didn't know we would be later poring over their output trying to recreate our family constellations. They were just trying to get backup data for aggregate stats collection.

So we need to get as many sources as possible and then draw our conclusions based on the preponderance of the evidence, and indicate how solid or otherwise our conclusions are.

Looks like at the time of the WW1 draft, Chester was building ships in Wilmington, Delaware.

There is an image associated with his draft registration on FamilySearch:

And sadly, on Sept 10, 1918 just a month before WW1 ended, while still a young man of 43 with a growing family, he fell off a scaffold in that shipyard.

Here is his death certificate: https://www.ancestry.ca/interactive/1674/31297_212504-01079/65358?

His wife Ada is the informant, and she gives his parents as Silas and Lucinda.  I think she should know.
