Promoting Veterans to Join Wikitree

Hi,

I am a Veteran, in Nov I will be going to the large VA for medical services in Orlando, which provides medical services to vets all over Central Fl.  I have been there many times and the vets represent all the wars and are very friendly to me.  One of them bought me a Vietnam vet hat since as a nurse I took care of them, they consider me a Vietnam vet.

Anyways, I want to write up a small invitation inviting them to join Wikitree and work on the military war project of their choice.  What do the military teams think of this?  I think this would be a very positive thing for the vets to participate in.

There's plenty of time for the teams to think and discuss it and let me know.

I love this idea!  Great  hobby - bet you spark some of them.
Great idea.
You'll need something to show them what you intend for them to do. Many people are interested in family history, but have no clue as to how to find information. Perhaps you could get a collection of "war stories" from the Vets for their own profiles or profiles of their buddies or ancestors. Many of us Veterans have fathers and grandfathers who were also military members. Soon, we'll be able to say that many have mothers and grandmothers who are veterans. I digress. Perhaps print out a few sample profiles that you like and/or make a list of activities that you think will be of interest. In the past, many veterans thought that no one wanted to hear their stories - but we do!
Lucy and Kenneth,

I was thinking of giving them some written information on Wikitree and show them a picture of a profile or two from different wars.  And talk up Wikitree explain how it is a nonprofit organization, where everyone is very friendly. They can not only work on profiles of veterans, but also their own. I want to get some input from the military team.

Thanks for commenting on my idea.

Thanks Taylor
Thanks Ken see the answer I wrote to Lucy it was addressed to both of you.

I think its a great idea.  You might also consider adding a free space page or resource page from some of the Military and War projects as well.

Taylor, one word of caution. WikiTree is not a non-profit. It is free and Chris has made a commitment to keep it that way. Here's a link to the section of the FAQ that explains:

Debi,

Thanks for clearing the status of Wikitree up for me.

Taylor
Sandra,

That is something I will have to work with the Military project on. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm a veteran from the Vietnam Era ,but I became interested in my own genealogy as an eighth grade history project a long time before I was in the US Army Medical Corps.
