I have found a death record for Nils J Nordstrom (actually the spelling is not correct on the website), but I think it could be him.
If you go to www.freebmd.org.uk and enter his surname only and the date of 1916 and county of lancashire you will see he is the only entry.
This couple you mention married in the June quarter of 1882, again it can be viewed on the web link above.
In the 1901 census there is an entry for a John Nordstrom, a Boarding House Keeper, aged 41 years, the census states he is married but there is no mention of his wife. There is an intriguing part to this entry as his housekeeper was listed along with her 4 children (the housekeeper was not married, her name was Mary McGouran), she died in 1940 and in the National Probate Calendar of Wills, administration was granted to Ursula Agnes Nordstrom (spinster) and Norah Veronica McDowell (married woman).
The 1911 census records John (Johan) a Foreign Shipping Agent, (still married but no sign of his wife again). Mary is still there within the household, still single, but now with 8 children, of which the last 2 children born have the surname Nordstrom.
I hope that this will assist and good luck in your research.
