Simon arrived in Massachusetts in 1651 at age of 9 as servant to Nicholas Butler^[5] Simon married Mary Butler, daughter of John & Mary (Lynde) Butler, on 4 October 1665 in New England, United States.^[6] They had nine known children during their marriage:

Renowned for his fervent opposition to the feudal system in the New World, Athearn passionately advocated for an individualist society, championing the idea that each person should be able to shape their own destiny. Notably, he played a pivotal role in rejecting Thomas Mayhew's bid for a lifelong governorship. This early display of patriotism and unwavering commitment to protest against the nascent government found a worthy successor in his son, Jabez.
