Biography
Eldest child of three children by James Haskell Ballentine and Carrie Kate Amelia Riser Ballentine. Those children were Mamie Ballentine Edwards (married Walter Edwards; Newberry SC), Annie Laurie Ballentine Harmon (married Thomas Simeon Harmon; Newberry SC), Edna Ballentine Coward (married James Lewis Coward; Union SC). After James H. Ballentine was killed in a sawmill accident, Carrie Ballentine remarried (Marion Luther Gruber, 1860-1937). She had three additional children with Mr. Gruber. Those half-siblings were: George Earnest Gruber (Silverstreet SC), Helen Gruber [Mrs. George Shealy] (Columbia SC), Sallie Belle Gruber [Mrs. Tarleton] (Charlotte NC).
