Christopher Berry, 96, a respected citizen and resident of Brasher Center, died on Wednesday (4/16/1913) at his son, Nelson’s, home. He came to the U. S. from Canada 63 years ago. He enlisted n Company C, 6th N. Y. Heavy Artillery, during the Civil War, and served until the war was over.
He lost his wife twelve years ago in the spring of 1901. The community extends their sympathy to the family, and especially to his son, Israel who cannot care for himself, and was left in the care of Alfred Berry at the request of his mother at her death.
He leaves to mourn his loss eight children, five boys and three daughters, as follows. Ludrick of Potsdam, Moses of Harrisville, Alfred, Israel and Nelson, of Brasher Center, Mrs. Benjamin Weatherhead and Mrs. Jerry Montonda, of Natural Bridge, Mrs. Benjamin Sharlow, of Raymondville, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those attending his funeral from out of town were all the children except Moses. They could not reach him in time because the wires not working. Grandchildren, Joseph and Mary Berry Gebo and son Kenneth, Mr. wad Mrs. George Berry of Potsdam, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Murphy and daughter, Arlen, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sharlow and daughter Beulah, of Massena, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Sharlow, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Pebles and daughter Vivian and Miss Ellen Sharlow, of Raymondville; William, Arthur, and Edith Berry, of Brasher Center.[10]
Obituary: The funeral of Christopher Barry was held at the Catholic church on Friday. Mr. Barry was 96 years of age and he died very suddenly at his son. Nelson's home shortly after entering same. He was a good. quiet man was the father of a large family of adult children. He has lived very many years at the Center.OA 24 April 1913
This community was shocked to hear of the sudden death af Christopher Berry, an aged and respected citizen and resident of Brasher Center for a number of years, haveing come to this country from Cananda about 63 years ago. He enlisted in the Civil War for about three years and for the last several years resided with his son Alfred at this place, where he was kindly cared for. He had beeen in his usual health up til the time of his death. On Friday April 11, he with his grandson William Barry, drove to Raymondville, a distance of 12 miles, to visit his daughter and other relatives, returning on Monday. On Wednesday morning he spoke of going to visit his son Nelson, who lives about a mile from here. When asked if the walk would not be to much for him, he said it would do him good. He was in the home only a short time when he dropped dead. The funeral, which was heald at the Catholic church in Brasher Falls, was largely attended. He leaves to mourn his loss eight children, five sons and three daughters as follows; Ludrick of Potsdam, Moses of Harrisville, Alfred, Isreal and Neslon of Brasher Center, Mrs Benjamin Weatherhead and Mrs Jerry Montondo of Natural Bridge and Mrs Benj Sharlow of Raymondville. Mr Berry enlisted in Company C, 6th NY Heavy Artillary and served until the was was finished. He lost his wife 12 years ago this spring since that time he had lived with his children. The community extends thier sympathy to the bereaved family especially to his son Isreal, who cannot care for himself and was left at the request of his mother at her death in the care of Alfred Barry, as gaurdian.
