John was the son of Jonathan Bauman and Maria Schneider. He anglicized his name to Bowman.
Following marriage to Elizabeth Stauffer, continued to live in the family farmhouse. A two-story white brick house was built in 1860 in front of the original log house which then became a summer kitchen. A Pennsylvania-style bank barn was also on the property. In 1861 census shows a servant of the name of 21-year-old Cudilla Algier, a Lutheran from Prussia.
He legally acquired the farm on 3 December 1869 following the death of his father and continued farming it until he retired in 1878. He sold the farm to a David Betzner (located north of Bloomingdale on either side of Highway 17) and moved to his son Hiram's farm (owned by a John Snyder in 1975, location unknown).
Buried in the Bloomingdale Mennonite Cemetery.
