Joe was born in 1863.[1] He came to New Zealand as an infant with his parents and two sisters on the "Talbot" and is mentioned in the diary his father wrote on the voyage out.
"Joe attended school in Kaiwaka in the early 1870s. At the age of 14 he travelled to the Northern Wairoa area and worked on the gumfields there at Marapiu and on the Wairoa Flats. During this time he worked with Fred Mould, who was later to become his brother-in-law. Maria [who was later to be his wife] Fred's sister worked as a cook in one of the camps." [2]
He married Maria Mould in 1888[3][4] in the Congregationional Church at Maungaturoto.[5] They had four children: Hilda Josephine, Joseph William Henry, John Morris and Talbot George.
Joe and Maria lived on land they had purchased on the south east side of Pukekaroro Mountain, from 1890-1900. Joe worked as a bush-feller and gum digger/collector. They planted orchards with apple, plum, peach and fig trees.
In 1900, they moved to Waipu to the farm known as Kuaha. They supplied cream to the Waipu Dairy Company. Then from 1903 Joe was "caretaker of the river entrance. This role included looking after river protection works, reporting to the Waipu River Board. In 1920 they moved to Kaiwaka. [6].
