Her father died when she was 4 and her mother when she was 15.
On 29 December 1874, at the age of 17, Sophia was bathing at Wyaga Station, Goondiwindi, Queensland, Australia and drowned.[1][2] At the time, Wyaga was owned by Richard and Lavinia Holmes. An inquest was held and the cause of death was established as drowning.[3]
