Biography

Written from the perspective of Jessie Gregor. Please be wary, much of this profile is my educated guess … there is always a chance that these earlier records may be attached to the wrong person because there are fewer records to corroborate them!

My great x5 grandmother, Ann or Anne Brinkworth, was born in about 1747 in Lacock, Wiltshire, England. Although there are a few Ann Brinkworth baptisms in Lacock, I went for the latest one which fits better with her age at marriage and with her child-bearing years seen through the baptisms of her children. Based on that, I think that she was baptised on the 27th September 1747 at Lacock.[1] Her parents were John and Mary Brinkworth which also fits with a witness at her wedding being John Brinkworth. (I believe that couple may have been the John Brinkworth and Mary Hibbard marriage on the 31st March 1733 in Lacock but I will add those profiles later when I've exhausted all the available evidence!)

Obviously, there are limited parish records this far back but the banns of marriage were read from the 16th December 1770 before Ann married Moses Dummer at Lacock on the 5th January 1771.[2] They were both 'of this parish' and their witnesses were John Brinkworth and Geo Jones. Moses was a labourer and Ann was a spinster.[3]

Moses and Ann had at least 12 (maybe 13) children with the following years of baptism, starting with Mary (1771), John (1773), Sarah (1775), Richard (1777), Ann (1779), then twins Isaac and Moses (1781), Jane (1783), James (1785), Ephraim (1786), William (1790), and Susanna (1793). There was also another Isaac baptised in 1802 with the same parents. This would fit with their first son Isaac sadly dying in 1799 but I wonder if Ann was too old to be the mother and maybe it was a grandchild passed off as their own? Or have I missed a different baptism for Ann herself? (There wasn't another marriage of a Moses and Ann Dummer so I don't think it was a different couple.)

I believe the most likely burial for Ann was on the 16th November 1803 at St Cyriac, Lacock;[4] and her husband Moses then passed away in 1810. (I checked the original burial parish register image on Ancestry but there was no age given. I have also searched the churchyard at Lacock but couldn't find their graves which is not unusual, of course, as they probably couldn't afford a headstone.)
