Hey, Tony!
Were your ears burning? I have been intending to write you and catch up at least a little. As I have a "free" moment from time to time, I try to work on some of MY families and recently have been trying to update the Toolan/Cain and Carrigg/Coughlin accounts. Found some forty-eleventh Toolan cousins in Sheridan,Wyoming, of all places, and one near here in New Jersey (we shall be getting together "soon").
On the Coughlin side, I found that John and Mary (Carrigg) Coughlin had at least one other children while in Ontario, a Margaret born in 1851. There is not enough evidence to determine if this is our great-grandmother born two years earlier than we "know," so possibly it was an earlier daughter of the same name who died young. Our Margaret's ages in the censuses seem to be pretty much in harmony with the 1853 birth. Am waiting for more information from Canada that may help...dunno.
That is great you have gone with FTDNA. Good company, we think. I have had some good "hits" with my Joslyn-Y, which seems to indicate there are no "non-paternity" events going back many generations, but I guess I never signed up for the mtDNA. That line, as you know, goes back to ---- (McNamara) Carrigg, IF the McNarama thing is correct.
I really have NO idea that our John Cain was born in County Roscommon. Still do not know when and where he and Mary Toolan (Toolen, Toolin) hooked up, but it could have been here in "the states." I have found evidence of the Cain name in Roscommon, however, so perhaps they married there and then came to the U.S. And based on some records of what are almost certainly Mary's brothers in Wayne County, Indiana, I now THINK our great-grandfather Bernard may have been born there and that later things got confused with Fort Wayne. In any case, have found no evidence of the Cains or Toolans in Allen County, Indiana. In fact, there seems to be NO evidence--that I can find--of our John Cain produced in his lifetime. But...I keep looking (in my "spare" time, of course).
Alas, the name Cain (Cane, Kain, Kane plus those with O') is legion. Toolan is the easiest, followed by Carrigg (Carrick).
A while back, you forward an e-mail you received from one of our Toolan cousins. I was right in the middle of some big project and wrote her I would get back to her ASAP. When I finally did, the e-mail bounced, so I found what I think is her mailing address and wrote. My letter was not returned and I have heard nothing. You? (Sorry. I need to look up her name, but maybe you will remember.)
Trust all is well and you and Sherry are busy. We took up Irish fiddle lately and are enjoying the lessons and the fun. All the best, and stay in touch!

Roger,
I recently decided to join the dna craze and got myself tested (I have 67 y markers from ftdna & the complete 23andme) - Want to work on our Cain line abit?
This was our second message after seeing "O'Kane" among the family names she listed, I gave her only my immigrant as John Cain b.1819 Roscommon.- I did not mention Bernard. She's in Australia.

Yes it does sound plausible. We are a bit stuck going back beyond my grandfather born in 1867 in Beagh, a townlet near Londonderry, in 1867; son of Bernard Kane. But a distant relative thinks he's worked out a bit more - I'll discuss with him
Mary

Hey, Tony! What's doin'?
Just back from a week at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, doing client work, but did make a little discovery that should interest
you. I found naturalizations for Patrick and Bernard Toolan in Wayne County, Indiana, in the early 1850s. These were two uncles of our great-grandfather Bernard Cain. I now think Bernard Cain was likely born in WAYNE COUNTY, Indiana, instead of FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Allen County). This would "explain" why I found NO evidence of the Cains in the Fort Wayne area, and if I can find Bernard's baptism, the marriage of his parents, or whatever in Wayne County, that will be great.
No Catholic records for Wayne County at the FHL in SLC, so have to start contacting churches in Richmond and other Wayne County locations and see what can be learned. Shall let you know!
Also while in SLC, I had lunch with cousin Margo Cain, Uncle Joe Cain's daughter. She and two other nuns live in Park City but she works in SLC. She just went through treatment for melanoma and then breast cancer, but seems in good shape. Looking forward to visiting with her on future trips!
Gotta' run, as I am facing a TON of stuff I left when I went to Utah a week ago, and now there are Christmas preparations as well.
All the best to you and yours!!
Roger

RE his death certificate: Ignore that Bernard Cain's death certificate indicates his mother was Mullen. She was clearly Mary Toolin. (Actually, the REAL spelling will probably forever remain uncertain--the name is found this way and as Toolan and Toolen. I think it is Toolin on two of her brother's grave markers and Toolan on a third, just for example! Mullen was the last name of their sister Bridget's husband.)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Bernard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Bernard:
