He was soon assigned as second lieutenant to an artillery unit in Charleston, South Carolina. He served there during 1832 and 1833, becoming adjutant of the Second US Artillery on July 13, 1833. On April 1, 1834, Cocke resigned from the military and became a cotton planter in Powhatan County, Virginia, and in Mississippi.

Civil War Service

Philip became a Confederate Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. However, Cocke was demoted from brigadier general to colonel after being transferred into the Provisional Confederate Army despite being one of the first officers to answer the call to defend Virginian soil. He watched as other men were promoted to generals ahead of him even though they had entered Confederate service after him. He lashed out by writing letters, even accusing Major General Robert E. Lee as being one of the main culprits for this affront. “I think General Lee has treated me very badly and I shall never forgive him for it,” Cocke complained to the superintendent at VMI, Francis H. Smith. Cocke did eventually receive a promotion to brigadier general in the Provisional Confederate Army four months after his demotion. By November 1861, rumors began to circulate among Cocke’s subordinates that he was suffering from a mental breakdown. He returned to his plantation in December and was dead before the New Year. He was later commended by General Robert E. Lee for his defensive policies and by General P.G.T. Beauregard for his actions as a Colonel at Blackburn's Ford. The Battle of Centreville was his last battle before he took his own life in Powhatan County, Virginia, after only 8 months service in the Confederate Army.[12][13]
