Helvis du Puiset was one of the daughters of Hugh IV du Puiset, Vicomte de Chartres and his wife Petronille, comtesse de Bar-sur-Seine.[1] Her birthdate is unknown but definitely before April 1174 when she is named together with her mother Petronilla, brother Milo and sister Marguerite (Petronilla uxor mea, cum liberis deis Milone, Helvide et Margarita), in a donation made to the Abbey of Mores by her father.[2]
The first name and family name of her first husband are unknown. It seems likely though that the marriage took place after April 1174 as she is not named with a husband in the charter referred to above. One daughter is known from this marriage;
Helvis is named in 1208 with the title Dame de Balnois (? see research notes) (domina de Beleno) in a charter in which her brother Milon du Puiset, Comte de Bar-sur-Seine confirms Helvis' donation of vineyards in Beleno to the Church of Seche-Fontaine,[3] but it's not clear if this is part of her own inheritance or perhaps land granted as part of the division of the territory of her first husband.
Her second husband was named Guy de Sennecey,[1] but there are no known children from this marriage.
Helvis du Puiset is said to have died in 1215 or after, but no primary source is cited to confirm this date.[1]
Charles Cawley in his mention of the charter of 1208[1] quotes the latin version of the title as domina de Balenio, but the original is definitely domina de Beleno. This is repeated as Beleno and Belleno later in the charter. His citation no. 278 is just 'Jully-les-Nonnains 1208, p. 33.' which would appear to be the same as source number 3 that has been used in this profile. It's not clear then whether the modern version Balnois is the correct place name.
