Biography

John appears on the roster for the Second Regiment of the Tryon County NY militia under Col. Jacob Klock which drew men from the Palatine precinct north of the Mohawk River extending to the Canadian border. He was in the Rev. War, at the Battle of Oriskany (1777). He was captured in the Rheimensnyder's Bush raid, which happened in what is now the westernmost area of Herkimer co. NY, near Manheim, appx. four miles North of the Little Falls. He was held as a prisoner of war for over two years circa 1781-1783. His brothers Nicholas and Bartholomew were also taken prisoners during the war at different times, pension files for all three brothers contain much more detail. He only lived a few years after his release & died about 1788. His wrists showed scars from the irons he wore.

See John FORBES Rev. War pension file #R-9517 in which his widow Nancy seeks a pension for his service.
