notes
1840 United States Census - Spartenburg, South Carolina. Reuben Giles is living near Charlotte Pope and Reuben Cantrell. He is between 30 and 40 years old. There are four males under five which corresponds to Fielden, John Thomas, James Bonapart and Robert. There is one male age 5 to 10 which corresponds with William. There are three females 5 to 10 which corresponds to Mary Ann, Harriet and Elizabeth and Angelina. So this number may be incorrect. There are two females between 10 and 20 which corresponds with Anna Cora and Mary Ann. A female aged 30 50 40 would be his wife Sarah Ann.
1850 United States Census - Spartenburg, South Carolina. Reuben Giles is listed as a farmer and says that he was born in North Carolina. His wife, Sarah, was born in South Carolina. Her age is incorrectly listed as twenty-two. The following children are in the home, Cora 22, Polly 20, Harriet 19, Angeline 18, William 16, Elizabeth 14, Robert 13, James 12, Thomas 10, Fielding 9, Martha 8, and Jane 6. The Rueben Cantrell family still lives close.
1860 United States Census -- Asheboro, Randoph County, North Carolina Reuben Giles is a farmer. He is 61 years old and has real estate valued at $2000. His personal property is valued at $3200. He was born in North Carolina. Sarah is called Anna and she is 60 years old and listed as a domestic. Also in the home is James age 21 who is also a farmer and Martha age 13.
Reuben's house was located on Highway 9 in Spartenburg County, South Carolina.
About the 1860 census. The Reuben listed there has a wife and children whose names differ from the Reuben I have tried to trace. I wonder if there are two Reubens about the same age that we are trying to trace. The Reuben on the tombstone had a wife named Sallie Ann--the 1860 census lists Anna. I think that Reuben's wife, Sallie is listed in the 1880 census as Sarah, living with son Fielding .The 1850 census lists Reuben with wife, Sarah and son Fielding along with several other children. I would like to hear some other thoughts on this.

He is enumerated in the 1850 census with Sarah and family but not with them in 1860. From his Estate papers he died Apr 14, 1851, Estate File 1046.
