Biography

Washington Gray was born May 16, 1890 to George Gray and Minerva Perry in Llano, Texas.

The 1900 Census shows Washington living with his mother, father, and siblings in Milburn, Texas. His father, George, and his oldest brother are both farming the land which the family rents while his mother takes care of the home. The school-aged children, including Washington, have attended school for several months of the previous year. [1]

On January 5, 1910, Washington married Harper Drury Edwards in McCulloch County, Texas. [2]

Just a few months after their marriage, Washington and Harper are living with his parents at the time of the 1910 Census. The family has moved about 35 miles northwest of their location in the previous census and is now living in San Saba, Texas. The family is renting the farm they work, and Washington, several of his brothers and his father farm their land. Washington's mother and his wife are at home. [3]

The next few years would see the family move around this area of Texas. In 1911, the couple's first child was born in Holt, Texas.[4] By 1916, they were in Rowena, Texas for the birth of their third child.[5] When Washington was counted for the World War I Draft, the family was living in Miles, Texas.[6]

By the 1920 Census, however, the family found their eventual home in Abilene, Texas. Washington was working as a carpenter employed for someone else while his wife was at home with their children. The family was sharing a home at 1442 North 8th Street in Abilene with Washington’s brother-in-law, Joseph Bunyon Edwards and his wife, Esther. [7]

The 1930 Census finds Washington and Harper renting a home at 1333 Cypress Street in Abilene, Texas. Washington is still employed as a carpenter and Harper is taking care of their children. Their oldest daughter, Petreta, is working as an operator for the local telephone company, and their younger children are attending school. [8]

Sometime in the mid- to late-30s, Washington was injured on the job, losing his right middle finger in a work-related injury. Initially awarded an insurance settlement, the courts eventually sided with the insurance company and reversed their decision. Due to complications from diabetes, Washington's health deteriorated following the injury. During an extended hospital stay, Washington slipped into a diabetic coma and eventually passed away on July 06, 1939 in Abilene, Texas. [9]
