After its division by Henry II in 1171 Hallaton became divided into two main manors, one of these was Engaine’s or Broughton’s manor which came to the family of Greinvill or Greyvill. In 1223-4 Eustace de Greinvill obtained half the town by fine from Robert Arsic and Sybil his wife, whose connexion with it is not known. Eustace held the manor until at least 1235-6, when he was taxed as the holder of one knight's fee in Hallaton. He was succeeded by Gilbert de Greinvill who was still living in 1247 and whose daughter and heir Joan married Sir John de Engaine to whom the manor passed. It descended in the Engaine family until the death of Sir Thomas Engaine in 1367. [1]
Unreferenced note: Eustace was son of Ralph, son of Richard, per the Granville genealogy, page 30.
