Biography

Michael Handy was born in May 1822. [1] He was the son of Brewster and Rosina (Unknown) Handy.

Michael was a well-to-do farmer in Tompkins County. He owned the farm on which there is a burial ground known as the Michael Handy Cemetery, and sometimes referred to as the Crumtown Road Cemetery.

Sometime before 1848, Michael married Susan Handy, whose maiden name is unknown. They had a daughter Mary E. Handy and a son, Charles, who died in infancy. Susan died in 1852. His second marriage was to Maria Elizabeth Wright. They adopted a son Alla who died young, and a daughter Phebe Handy Cummings.

Maria Elizabeth died in 1876 and Michael later married Catherine A. (Birchard) Patmore, the widow of George W. Patmore. She died in 1898 and is buried in the Ithaca City Cemetery in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York. [2]

Michael Handy was also ill in 1897. The following year, he sold his land in Danby.

South Danby – Michael Handy, whose right arm has been helpless for several days, from a light shock of paralysis, is improving and he hopes to gain the use of it once more. – Ithaca Daily News Wednesday July 14, 1897
Real Estate Transfer -- Michael Handy of Danby has sold two farms consisting of 161 and 33 acres, situated in Danby to the Misses Elmira, Ida May and Mary E. Martin, Consideration $1,950. -- Ithaca NY Daily News 1898-1899 (exact date unknown)

His will was dated November 27, 1899 and included his adopted daughter Phebe Cummings and his daughter Mary E. Wilcox.

Michael Handy died July 5, 1901 in Danby, Tompkins County, New York. He is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Candor, Tioga County, New York. [3]
