Biography

Luke moved to Farquier Co., Va. with his wife Nancy where they attended the broad Run Church at now New Baltimore, not far from the Prince William County Line, and the Broad Run Stream. Family eventually moved south where they were accepted by letter into the Turkey Creek Baptist Church in Anderson County, South Carolina in 1785.

12 Feb 1785 – Turkey Creek Baptist Church Abbeville SC – brother Luke Hanks and his wife, Nancy Hanks, place letters of membership. From 1785 to 1804 Both Luke Hanks and his wife Nancy are on the church rolls.

However, on August 1787 Mrs. Ann (Harris) Hanks, wife of Luke Hanks, was disowned and excluded for disorderly conduct and speaking disrespectfully of the brethren.33 Note: Ann Hanks became a Methodist and was very vocal in her practice of this religion. June 1789 Luke Hanks deceased.34

Last Will & Testament

The 21 May 1789 (probated 7 Oct 1789) will of Luke Hanks of Abbeville SC. names wife Anne and all children to share.... This estate did not clear probate until 1838 at the death of wife Anne Hanks. Part of the estate was acreage from Anne’s brother Col. Harris. The children named in the settlement include: Thomas, Luke c. 1775, Robert, George, John, Elizabeth, Martha Ann c. 1770, Priscilla, Nancy, Judith, Lucretia c. 1781, and Susan.

Luke Hanks was the son of Luke Hanks Jr (1715-1757) and Elizabeth Dale,he was born in Richmond Co VA.At some point he and his brother Abraham moved to Pr Wm Co VA,they likely followed their uncle Robert Dale to Pr Wm County.

Robert Dale was the son of Abraham Dale and Winifred Southern of Richmond Co VA,he was a tennant of Cuthbert Bullitt on Kettle run in PWC.Robert Dale left 160 acres to Luke Hanks in his will,before leaving VA Luke Hanks sold this land to Thomas Evans.

Luke Hanks was married to Nancy Harris,they were members of the broad run baptist church in Pr Wm County,they left this church and moved to Abbeville Co SC where they became members of the Turkey creek baptist church.Luke Hanks died between May and Oct 1789,his children were Thomas, Martha, Nancy, Luke, Elizabeth, Susan, Lucretia, Robert, Judith, George, Priscilla.

WILL: In the name of God, Amen, I Luke Hanks of south Carolina, Pendleton County, being now ia a weake and low state of health but sound of memory do make this my last will and testament this twenty first day of May seventeen hundred and eighty nine in maner and for following viz. Imperimus I bequeath my sole to allmighty God in hopes of a blessed and glorious reserrection thro the merits of Jesus Christ my savior and my body to the Earth to have a decent and Christian Burial at the charge of my executors and as touching and concerning such worldly goods as it hath pleased God to bestow upon me I give bequeath dispose them i the manner and form following in the first place I will that my just debts and funeral charges be pade. Item I give and bequeath to my dear and well beloved wife Ann Hanks all my hole estate real and personal during her natural life and at her death to be equally divide among all my children and if any of my children should marry I will that my wife may dispose of any of my estate to them toward their sustenance but shall be accounted for at her death to rest of the children and lastly I constitute and ordain my loving wife, Anne Hanks executrix and my friend John Haynie executor of this my last will and testament sind with my hand and sealed with my seal the day and year within written.his Luke X Hanksmark In presence of Blake Mauldin John Reaves

Luke Hanks Jr 1715-1757 was married to Elizabeth Dale, sister of Robert Dale who died in 1778 in Pr Wm co VA.

Luke Hanks lll 1740-1789 was the son of Luke Hanks and Elizabeth Dale, Luke Hanks lll received 160 acres in the will of Robert Dale who was his uncle. Luke Hanks lll was married to Nancy Ann Harris.

May I strongly suggest that a generation has been skipped in the family of Luke Hanks. The Luke Hanks that moved from Pr Wm Co VA to Anderson Co SC was Luke Hanks III 1740-1789,he was the son of Luke Hanks Jr 1715-1757 who was the son of Luke Hanks Sr 1681-1743.
