Mary was born about 1708 in Virginia. She married Stephen J. K. Smith in Orange, Virginia about 1729 and they had six children between 1730 and 1739.
Mary's (Polly) last name might have been Hawkins. A deed in Orange Co., Virginia between Stephen J. K. Smith and Joseph Hawkins is dated 14 May 1738 for the lease of 60 acres. Joseph Hawkins may have been a relative of Mary Polly.
Mary Smith passed away in 1876 Orange Co., Virginia and is buried in Blue Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Somerset, Orange County, Virginia.[1]
Find A Grave memorial comment: "Researchers have tried for years to discern her true maiden name. Most believe it was Hawkins, but there is no proof positive of that. She lived with or near her son, James, until her death."
The wife of Joseph Hawkins was Margaret Smith, who birth has been speculated at about 1700-1710. If this birth time period is correct, she could not be the mother of Mary. This conclusion, however, relies on the accuracy of dates that appear to be nothing more than guesses. If Mary married Stephen Smith about 1729, as seems likely from the birthdates of their children, her birth can be reasonably estimated as about 1708 (as here), making her about 21 at the time of her marriage. However, it is not impossible she was as young as 15 or 16.
