Born in about 1784 to Loyalists Davis Hawley and Mercy Cass, they supported the British side in the American War of Independence and were forced to flee first to Quebec and then re-settled in Upper Canada after the British lost.
In 1805 Jehiel married Lavina Ryder. They farmed in Ernestown for many years. They had 7 children: Davis, Charles, Reuben Castle, Myra (Flindall), Pamelia (Roblin), Lydia and Nelson W.
Jehiel died possibly in 1851 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Napanee, Ontario. He and Lavinia are on the 1851 Census, both age 67 and their daughter Myra is living with them, age 43. By the 1861 Census Lavinia is listed as a widow.
Jehiel and Lavinah were both "of Ernest Town" when married in 1805.
