Biography

Ira Grant Hedrick was born in Edwards County, Illinois to Henderson Hedrick and Mary Ann (Bryan) Hedrick.

According to family stories,[1] Ira Grant and his older cousin, Asa Adam Hedrick, worked for a time driving cattle from Texas and Montana to Wichita.

He married Nancy Louise Luther in 1889, and they had three children, Arlie, Louise, and Marie. After Nancy died in 1908, he married her sister, Adeline Malinda Luther, known as Addie. They had one child, Ira Grant Hedrick, Jr. After Addie, too, died in 1917, he married Mary Elma Bryan.

Ira Grant Hedrick was a well-know civil engineer who designed bridges in the U.S. and Mexico.

Ira Grant Hedrick died on December 28, 1937.

Dr. Ira Grant Hedrick (1868 – December 28, 1937) was an American civil engineer who was the designer of the Burnside Bridge in Oregon, the Red River Bridge, Clarendon, and Newport bridges in Arkansas, and many other bridges and viaducts. Hedrick designed many large scale bridges in Arkansas in late 1920s through early 1930s. Hedrick was also president of the Kansas City Viaduct and Terminal Railway Company. The Historic American Engineering Record says that he was "one of the outstanding engineers of the South".

Hedrick was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He received his B.S. in civil engineering University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1892. He received another bachelor's degree from the university in 1899 in Applied Science and M.S. degree in 1901.[3] He earned his D.Sc. degree from McGill University in 1905.[2]

Ira Grant Hedrick, who designed bridges in the United States, Mexico and Canada, died at his home here today at the age of 69. One of his major works was the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Ore., said to be one of the first lift span bridges with car tracks and automatic trolley connections.[3]
