Location History

Clausthal was created from 1548 at the intersection of the Old Harz Road and the Harz High Road , the predecessors of the federal roads 241 and 242 .
In 1924, the town of Clausthal, which was elevated to the status of “free mountain town” in 1554, merged with the neighboring district town of Zellerfeld to form the new mining town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld . On January 1, 1972, the community of Buntenbock south of Clausthal was incorporated. From 1972 to 2014, Clausthal was the administrative seat of the Oberharz joint municipality , which was dissolved on January 1, 2015. The mining and university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld was formed from the mining town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld, the mining town of Altenau, the mining town of Wildemann and the municipality of Schulenberg in the Upper Harz Mountains. The town hall is located in Clausthal next to the market church.

George worked as a pocharbeiter, a job description which required use of a stamping machine to separate to break apart the chunks of stone to remove the impurities from the mined ore.

History of the Market Church of the Holy Spirit in Clausthal that is pictured as a background image here. [3]
So many people will think and say, oh, what can be so special about a small town church that you should drive a certain distance for it. However, one should know that the Evangelic Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit in Clausthal-Zellerfeld is the largest wooden church in Germany and due to its architecture and interior design is one of the most important architectural monuments of North German Baroque.
