Grace Culwen, born 1134, daughter of Thomas de Culwen and Unknown Galloway, was the wife of Thomas of Workington.[1]
We are still working on the sources and conclusions for the Culwen ancestry. Grace had Galloway blood as a granddaughter of Fergus of Galloway and she would have been a cousin of Roland, Constable of Scotland, and relative of Allan of Galloway, MagnaCarta advisor,
The precursor to this marriage was the marriage of Furgus' son, Utrech, born circa 1120 in Carrick, Dundonald, Argyleshire, Scotland, married ca 1145 to Gunnilda Of ALLERDALE, daughter of Waltheon Dunbar, who held the very sizable Allerdale region and who had significant stature in the Norman controlled Middle England. Gunnilda was mother of Roland and provides supporting rationale for Grace Culwen to be direct grand daughter of Fergus.
This was a Cumberland marriage of the highest level. and it included the Meschin family line.
Thomas had a notable aristocratic Pedigree. Gospatric I Dunbar was a GGF, his paternal grandparents were Orm, lord of Seaton and Gunnilda Dunbar who received land grants from her generous brother Waltheon. Paternal greandmother Gunnilda had a pedigree that included the ruling families of England and Scotland, and her father had status above the families of the prior Earls of Norhumberland/Cumberland. The mother of Thomas, was of Norman ancestry, with the very powerful Ranulph Meschin as a GGF and direct ancestry of the Dukes of Normandie.
There were 3 children
Alan was not a child of Thomas and Grace. His father was Patrick
Roger Beauchamp married Grace Culwen Workington, after the 1200 death of her husband.
Beauchamp is an ancient Family, that came into property both at the time of William Rufus and at the time of Henry. Roger's grandfather probably was in the service of William the Conqueror.
The 2nd marriage of Grace who was of Galloway, thru her mother, would likely be motivated by estate property that could benefit descendants. Patrick Culwen outlived his mother. It also lends confirmation of the significant pedigree and aristocratic standing of Grace. It also may reflect political pressures with King John's reign 1200
