George W. Jarvis was born about 1839 in Greenfield[1], Massachusetts. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

Jarvis who served with the 21st Massachusetts and was also from Pittsfield. These details can sometimes complicate research!
1870: Pittsfield, Massachusetts with 54-year-old white moulder Benjamin Willoughby; 27-year-old Irish immigrant cigar maker Michael Finnegan; and fellow black barber William Gardiner, his spouse Lena, and their child Francis[2]
Private in Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 24 years old, married and working as a hairdresser when he enlisted on 23 October 1863 in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Mustered out with his regiment on 20 August 1865.[3]
Note: there is also a George Jarvis (no middle initial) in Company A.
