Elizabeth and James' marriage record states that they married 19 Nov 1856. This was her second marriage; she had at least six children with her first husband James Harry Lane. Any children born before 1856 should have the surname Lane.
In this census he is listed with the surname Lane. James Lane may have been his father, but James Jeffries raised him, which is probably why he took the Jeffries surname.
