Biography

Mary Kimble was born in Baltimore County, Maryland by 1687, assuming she was at least 16 when she married for the first time in 1703. She was the daughter of John Kimble. [1]

"Kemball, John, Sr., Balto. Co., 21st Feb., 1704-5; 12th Apr., 1705.
To Mary Jackson, Obediah Pritchard, Jane Ashford and Mary Capell, personalty. Rowland and William Kemball, personal estate provided they do not molest ex. son John, ex., and hrs., residue of estate, real and personal, including dwelling plantation. Test: Wm. Stevens, Jno. Siarfe, Wm. Whaley, Jno. Roberts, Henry Burke. 3. 484."

Mary Kembal married Thomas Jackson in Baltimore Co., on 25 Jul 1703.[2][3] According to Barnes, Thomas Jackson was the "son" of Henry Wriothesley.[4]

". . . on 13 Feb. 1705/06 John and Mary conv. 200 a. of Drysdale's Habitation (granted on 1 June 1685 to Henry Wriothesley who left it in his will to his 'son' Thomas Jackson who left it in his will to his w. Mary, now w. of Roberts) . . ."

This is incorrect. In May 1704, Robert Dresdell left Drysdell's Habitation to "son-in-law", Thomas Jackson.[5]

"Drysdell, Robert, Balto. Co., 3rd May, 1704; 19th June, 1704. To sons-in-law John Fisher and Thomas Jackson, ex., entire estate. Test: Thos. Newson, Thos. Bucknall, Jno. Kembell. 3.241."

This would infer that Mary was the daughter of Robert Dresdell. However, at the time the term "son-in-law" was applied to a stepson or the husband of a daughter. It is likely that Robert's wife had previously been married and Thomas Jackson was Dresdell's stepson.

Also, Henry Wriothesley didn't die until 1709, leaving 200 acres "Drisdall's Habitation", which he purchased from John and Mary (Kimble) Roberts in 1705, to Thomas Wriothesley Sicklemore.[6]

Thomas left the land to his wife Mary in his will of Jan 1704/05.[7]

"Jackson, Henry [Thomas], Balto. Co., 24th Jan., 1704; 1st Mch., 1704-5. To wife's brother Wm. Kimball, personalty. wife Mary, extx., and her hrs., residue of estate, real and personal. Test: Thos. Greenfield, Thos, Morris Hannis. 3. 432."

It does not appear that Mary and Thomas had any children. Mary married John Roberts on 11 Apr 1705,[2] and on 15 Aug 1706, she and John Roberts administered Thomas' estate.[8] John and Mary sold 50 a. "Mascall's Humor," which Thomas Jackson had inherited from his father, on 24 Jan 1705/6 to John Hale. They sold, 200 a. "Driscoll's Habitation," which Thomas Jackson had inherited from his (presumed) step-father, Robert Driscoll, on 13 Feb 1705/6.

Mary and John had six children:

  1. John Roberts, b. 1 Jun 1708. John and his brother Stephen received tracts "Foster's Neck" and "Wolf Harbor," as well as lots in Joppa Town in their father's will.
  2. Mary Roberts, b. 24 Nov 1710; d. abt.1775; m. 31 Jan 1729, William Talbott.[2] Mary, w. of William Talbott received 200 a. "Wetherall's Last Addition" in her father's will.
  3. Anne Roberts, b. 20 Aug 1713, Baltimore Co., MD; d. 29 Oct 1749;[9] m. 28 Apr 1729, Archibald Buchanan Jr.[2] Anne, Frances and Lucina received 400 a. "The Forest".
  4. Stephen Roberts, b. 24 Feb 1716.
  5. Frances Roberts, b. 13 Apr 1719.
  6. Lucina Roberts, b. 1 Mar 1725;[10] d. 1789; m. 27 Mar 1749, John Allender.[2] Ch.: William, Margaret, John, Nicholas.

John Roberts died in 1729, leaving a will (made 9 Feb 1728/29) naming all his children, and leaving his widow, Mary, and friend, John Crockett, as executors.[11] Mary, son John, and son-in-law Archibald Buchanan, posted administrative bond on 24 Jun 1729. And Mary, now w. of David Hughes administered John's estate on 19 Jun 1731, 15 Nov 1733, and 19 Dec 1733.[12][13]

Mary's date of death is unknown.

Research Notes

Joppa was northwest of Foster's Neck. Joppa was laid out into 40 lots of half an acre each and were offered at one pound, seven shillings each. Individuals buying lots were required to build houses of no less than 400 sq. ft. within 12 months of purchase. On 20 Jul 1726, "Daniel Hughes took up lot No. 22" and on 27 July, John Roberts took up lot No. 17. On 27 Jun 1727, Jonathan Hughes succeeded David Hughes in the ownership of lot #22.[14]

On 7 Apr 1740, a David Hughes witnessed the will of Thomas Gosling in St. Mary's Co. [15]

RE: the Joppa Town MAP above, wonder where the front gate is? The Maryland Historical Magazine states, " Heathcoate Pickett was "hanged during the Revolution at the gate of Joppa Town, for being a Tory". He was a gggg-Uncle
