George Lindsey ******************************************************************************************************** Dear List, I recently came across a list of persons buried in Vincennes City Cemetery, which included Sgt. William Lindsey, 8th PA regiment. I contacted Danny Wilson, who is the grounds superintendent at Vincennes City Cemetery, who checked the grave, and confirmed that the William Lindsay buried there is Wm. Lindsey, 8th PA regiment, died 10-8-1836, age 76 years". This information means that William Lindsay of the 8th PA regiment, is also William Lindsay, born 1760, in Chester Co., PA, who married Elizabeth Mays (Mace) in 1781, and later, Clarissa Prior. This is also the William Lindsay who, as a young soldier of the revolution in 1776, was left at Fort Lee, while his father and three uncles crossed the Hudson River to Fort Washington, where they were captured by the British William's father and two of his uncles died during captivity. William moved to Harrison Co., VA after the war, where he lived for 5 or 6 years before moving to Jefferson and Shelby Co's., KY, where he lived until 1805, when he moved to Vincennes, Knox Co., IN, where he lived out his life. Discovering that "William of Westmoreland" and "William of Knox" are one and the same person means that I can eliminate Sgt. William Lindsay of the 8th PA regiment as a possible grandfather of my Joshua Lindsey. Now I am curious about the family of Sgt. William Lindsay. Could he be the William Lindsay who was on an early census of Shelby Co., KY (1792-1795)? Could he be related (a brother?) to Hester Lindsey, who married Samuel Cooper in Shelby Co. in 1795? Or Anna Lindsey, who married Benjamin Boyd in Shelby Co., in 1794? Leven Cooper (Samuel's father) lived in Hempfield Township in Westmoreland Co., PA, during the Revolutionary War, before moving to Shelby Co. And a William Lindsay purchased land in Hempfield Township in 1775. This is not likely the Sgt. William who was born in 1760, but perhaps his father, who died while in captivity. I have more information to share about William, and of course, many questions about him. I'd like to hear from anyone who is interested in him.
