Biography

Hawise married first to Walter de Brewes.

  • In Michaelmas term 1233 Walter and Hawise were suing the abbot of Gloucester for the church of Hannington, Wiltshire. [1]

Hawise married second to Patrick de Chaworth.

Burial

Buried at Ewenny Priory, Glamorgan, where the greater part of her tombstone was found during some alterations to the church in 1895. The head is, unfortunately, missing, but the rest of the figure is in good preservation. The inscription runs as follows:

'(De la nob)le Dame : Hawise : de : Londres : pensez
(Et chanter) pur : la : so(n) : alme : pult (?) : pat : noster.'t

Research Notes

She was heiress in 1258/67 to Mabel de Cantelowe. The exact relationship of the two is unknown. Some people think Hawise was Mabel's granddaughter, but Douglas Richardson in 2005 stated that "...it is equally possible that Mabel was Hawise's paternal aunt or cousin, or a younger 2nd wife of her grandfather. Also, I hasten to point out that Cantelowe was not necessarily Mabel's maiden name. Rather, unless she was from a particularly lofty pedigree, the surname Cantelowe is probably Mabel's married name at the time of her death, not her maiden name."[1]
