Biography

John Lyngwood (or Lingwood) of Braintree, Essex, England is the earliest known person of this family, and heads the pedigree found in the Visitations of Essex.[1] The Visitations state that he descended from the Lingwoods of Hereford or Gloucester, though his parents remain unknown. He is called a woolen draper in his will.
He is of general interest as the grandfather of several New England immigrants. He has been identified as the father of Agnes, wife of John Loomis, based on several pieces of connecting evidence.[2] The first is a letter from William Lingwood of Braintree, Essex, to his Cousin Clarke, generally thought to be Nicholas Clarke of Hartford, dated 20 March 1651/2.[3] In it he asks Clarke to convey his greetings to his cousin Loomis and cousin Cullivick [Cullick], most probably Joseph Loomis who emigrated from Braintree, Essex, to Windsor Connecticut in 1638 and John Cullick, Secretary of the Colony of Connecticut 1648-1658. These family connections are then shown by the will of John Lingwood who names his son-in-law John Loomis, who married his daughter Agnes Lingwood, and also his son-in-law Henry Clarke who married Susan Lingwood. The will of John Loomis in 1619 names his wife Agnes, as well as his son Joseph Loomis.[4]
John Lingwood was born say 1523 (1515-1525), presumably at Braintree, Essex, England, based on the birth of his first child. He was married twice. Both of his wives were named Joan, though it is likely from the wording of his will that his first wife was the mother of his children. They are sometimes said to be the same as the Jane Marlar who also married a John Lingwood; however, their marriage occurred in 1592, and so is much too late to be the same as either wife of this John Lingwood.[1] He occurs in a Feet of Fines in 1547 with his wife Joan, and his wife was also Joan in his will in 1597.[5] The importance of this is to show that both his wives were named Joan. From baptism records at Chelmsford and from his will, up to nine children can be identified.
John Lingwood made his will on 6 April 1597 and it was proved on 3 May 1597. He names his wife as his second wife and the wording implies his children were all by his first wife. He names two sons and at least 4 daughters. He also gave the names of three of his sons-in-law.

Research Notes

  • Which John: It is often found on the internet that John Lyngwood was the son of William Lyngwood and Mary Wilson. This is incorrect and is placing this John Lingwood in the wrong generation of the Lingwood pedigree. This John Lingwood was born in the 1520s; the son of William and Mary Lingwood was born almost a century later about 1615. John Lyngwood was actually the grandfather of William Lyngwood, and great-grandfather of the other John Lyngwood, as found in Visitation pedigree.[1]
  • Wife Jane Marler?: From the Visitations of Essex we know that "a" John Lingwood was married to Jane Marlar, daughter of William Marlar and Margaret Perye.[1] Since we know that both wives of this John Lingwood were named Jane (or Joan), it is usually concluded that it was this John Lingwood married Jane Marlar. However, John Lingwood and Jane Marlar were married on 14 December 1592 at Kelveldon.[25][26] Jane Marlar certainly was not the wife of this John Lingwood who was having children in the 1540s.
  • Two wives of John Lingwood: From his will, we know that at the time of his death he was married to Joan and that she was his second wife. This raises several possible problems. In this time period, Jane and Joan were the same name and were used interchangeably. From baptism records and from a Feet of Fines record, we know that both of wives were named Joan/Jane. His will makes it likely that all children were by his his first wife.
As discussed above, neither of these wives appear to be the same as the Jane Marlar who also married a John Lingwood. The dates are way off and she was certainly of a different generation. There is chance that the second wife Joan is the same as Jane Malar. However, it would mean a marriage late in life to a woman much younger than himself, and you would not expect the Visitation to give this marriage rather than the marriage to her first husband by whom she had children.
  • Unplaced Lingwood: A Robert Lyngwood was buried on 12 December 1663 in Chelmsford.[27] This could be another child of John Lingwood, or his father, or other near relative. There is no way to place Robert Lingwood into the family at this time.

From the Visitations, we know that "a* John Lingwood married Jane Marlar, but this marriage took place in 1792: see the database

Essex, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812 at Ancestry: John Lingwood Marriage Place Kelvedon, St Mary the Virgin, Essex, England Marriage Date 14 Dec 1592 Spouse Jane Marler

This accords well with the visitation, which mentions Kelvedon.

Register of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials Service of Church: Registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials Incumbent Kelvedon, St Mary the Virgin Parish Records 1558-1654

I think that the John who married Jane Marlar was a grandson or great-grandson of this John Lyngwood.

posted by Anne Leggett
Did you mean 1592 (rather than 1792) Anne? From his will, John Lyngwood married a Joan a widow whose married name was Skynner (he left money to her sons Christopher and John). So the marriage of a John Lingwood to Joan Marler at Kelvedon in 1592 is not this man. There is no reason why it cannot be the son John though.

I agree that it is chronologically impossible for this John Lingwood to have married Jane Malar as found in the Visitations. I have disconnected Jane Malar as a spouse, created a new spouse Joan Unknown, moved all children to this new spouse, and reworked the biography to make clear the reasoning for the changes. Let me know if you spot other errors, or have have comments.

Thanks Joe - I have found a couple of Marler of Kelvedon wills on Essex Archives Online which I will transcribe. They have mentions of the Jane Marler who married John Lingwood/Lyngwood. Edited to add: This John still needs a second wife Joan (Unknown) Lingwood AKA Skynner.

Those will be great to see Jo. Is one of her father William Marlar?

One is of her brother William who says that she is now the wife of John Lingwood

Date of the will? If it is after 1597, then that will be proof she was married to a different John Lingwood since she couldn't be married to a dead man.

William Marler her brother 1609

So her brother William Marler (d. 1609) had a WikiTree profile which I have just connected to his parents. He also (supposedly) has PGM descendants through his daughter. I hope you find time to transcribe or summarize his will - it will be helpful

Yes, of course I meant 1592. From the visitation pedigrees, it "felt" more like grandson or further down the tree to me, but of course that's not evidence!

The marriage in Kelvedon was a good spot.

For your consideration, in this profile it has Agnes Lyngwood being baptized 3 Aug 1547. But in Agnes's profile it has her born about 1564?

Removed Lyngwood-29 and Wilson-6776 as parents.
