Biography

Cloe was born about 1749, the daughter of Robert Marvel and Rachel Chase.

She first married Jonathan Scudder and they had a daughter Rachel Scudder born about 1769. Her husband names her and her daughter Rachel in his 1771 will.

Cloe's father, Robert Marvel, leaves a bequest to his daughter Chloe Scudder, widow of Jonathan Scudder, and to his granddaughter Rachel Scudder, in his March 1772 will, in Sussex County, Delaware.

Subsequently, Cloe married James Barr. A 1778 probate record (settling with her sister-in-law Hannah Scudder Day, over the estate of her first husband's father, shows this second marriage. She had at least two children from the second marriage, as Betsey Barr is left a bequest in Rachel Chase 's 1791 will, as is "Cloe Nottingham." In 1793, Cloe's brother Thomas Marvel left a bequest to his "nephew, Robert Barr." See the profiles of Rachel Chase and Thomas Marvel for details.

The given name of Cloe's Nottingham third husband is unclear. Possibly Jacob?
