Biography

Samuel was born about 1745 to Gideon Murch and Elizabeth (Bastin) Murch, and christened on 21 January 1755 in the Presbyterian faith in Ottery St Mary, Devon, England, age 10. ^[1] Samuel had seven brothers and sisters, but Bishop's Transcripts for the area reveal that two of these died either at birth or when young. (It does not record gender, nor a name, merely 'Child' and 'Young Child' of Gideon Murch.)

On Boxing Day (26 December) 1774, ^[2] Samuel married a young widow, Margaret (Marshall) Littly, in Ottery St Mary after banns, by John Coleridge. The law still stated that all marriages had to take place in a Church of England church, even if both parties were nonconformists (apart from Quakers and Jews). Margaret brought an eleven-year-old son, Richard, with her. Infant death was to follow Samuel, however, as their first son, another Samuel, died on their first wedding anniversary in 1775 aged six months. Another Samuel followed in 1778, and lived to 1849. Further research will doubtless uncover other children, for Margaret did not die until 1789.

Samuel remarried two years later on 14 March 1791, ^[3] this time to Eleanor Bending (Samuel signed his name, but Eleanor marked.) Samuel and Eleanor had the following children: John 1792, James 1793, and Anna 1795. The baptisms of all three were recorded in the nonconformist registers, as were the burials of their parents in 1825 and 1834. Samuel is described as a weaver.

Samuel died and was buried on 28 October 1825, aged 70. ^[4] His widow, Eleanor, survived him by nine years.
