Biography

George Richard Quiningborough is born in 1865 in Ropsley, Lincolnshire, England. He is the son of George Quiningborough (1835-1893) and Sarah Nix (1827-1891). Ropsely is a small village about 10 kilometres southwest of Sleaford and about the same distance east of Grantham. It is within three kilometres or so of the parish of Heydour where Sarah Nix was born. George is christened on July 16, 1865, in Ropsley [1]. George Quiningborough (the father) is a cordwainer (shoemaker).

In the 1871 census records, George is six years old, living with his family in Ropsley [2]. In the 1881 census records, he is 16 years old, living with his family in Ropsley and his occupation is a grocer [3]. In the 1891 census records, the 26-year-old George is living in Ropsley in the house of Thomas Cardwell [4]. His occupation is a groom.

On January 22, 1901, George marries Eliza Askew in Spittlegate [5]. Spittlegate is now a suburb of Grantham. George and Eliza have two children:

• John Thomas Quiningborough 1901-1976

• Leonard George Quiningborough 1904-1904

In the 1901 census records, the couple is living in Brewery Hill in Spittlegate [6]. George’s occupation is shown as a “brewers labourer.” In the 1911 census records, the couple is still living in Grantham and they now have one son [7].

George dies in Grantham in June 1912 at the age of 47 [8][9]. He is buried in the Grantham Cemetery and Crematorium [9]. Eliza lives on until 1920 and she, too, is buried in the Grantham Cemetery and Crematorium.
