Family Ancestry

Andrew Jackson "Dack" Ramey was a son too John Henry Ramey and Marina "Rena" Rebecca Osborne. The Rameys are thought to have been of French descent.

Legacy

Andrew Jackson "Dack" Ramey was considered a desperate character, he was known to to be handsome and shrewd. He held the life of Jessee James as an inspiring soldier. He was troubled from his youth to his tragic death. He spent time in the penitentiary for the murder of John Lee. He later shot and killed Hugh Moore. A bounty was placed for his capture, dead or alive. Andrew had plans to surrender, but was tricked by 3 men who later ambushed him and killed him.

Personal

Andrew Jackson "Dack" Ramey was born about 1867 in Scott, Virginia.[1][2] He was a son of John Henry Ramey, Sr. and Marina Rebecca Osborne.[1][2]

In 1884, Andrew is sent to the Richmond Penitentiary in Virginia with his brother William for twelve years for the murder of John Lee. Andrew and William were later pardoned by the Governor for evidence being only circumstantial.[3]

On November 13, 1889 Andrew shot and killed Hugh Moore in his home on the Clinch River in Scott, Virginia, United States after a drunken brawl in which Andrew is shot in the leg and through the coat.[4][5][6] Andrew claims he killed Hugh Moore in an act of self defense. He is believed to have robbed and murdered Moore. Andrew was never tried for this murder. For months he is at large with a bounty offered for his capture, dead or alive.[7]

Andrew is ambushed and killed by Sam Wax and J. E. Moss on January 11, 1890.[6][8] Sam Wax had previously cautioned Andrew to not surrender to anyone but him, so that they could split the reward and Andrew could pay for his attorney. Andrew instead was ambushed with his brother William and father John. He drew his Winchester, shots were fired and he was shot dead. Andrew is buried at the Ramey graveyard in Miller Yard. The place called "the Dack Ramey killing place and later his body was moved to the Powers Family Cemetery in Scott County, Virginia, United States.[9]
