Samuel Roe was born in Lincoln County, Tennesseea in Apr according to the 1900 census. The year 1843 aligns with most records. His parents were Joseph Roe and Susanna Waggoner. He was the oldest of four siblings. His three younger sisters were; Arepha, Nancy, and Susan.

1 Oct 1850 US Census: Lincoln County, Tennessee; Samuel (7)b was living with his parents, Joseph (33) and Susan (35), sisters; Arepha (2) and Nancy (under 1), and his paternal uncle, Samuel Roe (19)[1]

21 Jun 1860 US Census: District 6, Lincoln, Tennessee; Samuel (17)c was living with his parents, Joseph (42) and Susan (45), and sisters; Arepha (12), Nancy (10), and Susan (8).[2]

Military Records:
15 May 1861, Tennessee - Samuel enlisted as a Confederate Private in the Tennessee 8th Infantry, Company K and mustered into service the same day. His reported age was 18.d [3]
15 Sep 1862, Mulberry, Tennessee - He re-enlisted in the same unit.[4]
31 Dec 1862, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee - Samuel was captured and held as a POW at the Battle of Stone’s River.[5]

After the war, Samuel Roe and Mary F. Isom took out a license to wed on 4 Oct 1865.[6] The rites were solemnized on 8 Oct 1865 in Lincoln County, Tennessee.[7]

21 Jul 1870 US Census: PO Mulberry, District 6, Lincoln County, Tennessee; Living in the household were; Sam (27), his wife, Mary F. (20), and their son, Lawson C. (2).[8]

"(following info by Fred Roe) Samuel Roe was the son of Joseph Roe and Susan Waggoner. He was married to Mary Fletcher Isom. They had 4 children: Lawson C Roe, Joseph Valentine Roe, Lucy Ann Roe, and Susie Fletcher Roe. Mary Fletcher died sometime between 1880 and 1883. About 1884 he married Alice R McGee and they had 4 children together. During this time he moved to/near Abilene, Texas, and died there in 1920.” [9]
