Biography

Susannah Sowell was born in 1782 in Bertie, North Carolina, daughter of James William Sowell (~1741–<1807) and Sarah Baker (1743–1821).

Susannah married Theophilus Pearce (born in 1750 in North Carolina; son of Arthur Pearce and Mary (Everette) Pierce). Their children were:

  • Mary Pearce Shows (1793–1869)
  • John Pearce (1795 – unknow)
  • Patsy Pearce Brooks (1798 – unknown)
  • Tamar Pierce (1799–~1854)
  • Alexander Pearce (1801 – unknow)
  • Theophilus Pearce (1804–185)
  • Elias Pearce (1807–1863)

To all people to whom ?? represents shall come James Sowell do send greetin. Know yes, that I the said James Sowell of the state of South Carolina Kershaw District Planter for and in consideration of the love and good will ands affection I have and do bear towards my loving daughter Susanah Pearch the wife of Theophilus Pearce of the same district I have given granted and delivered a certain negro girl named Hannah, about six years old and by this presents do truly give and grant unto the said Susanna Pearch unto the said Susanna Pearce her heirs executors and assign forever the first offspring of the said Hannah to Poll Pearce daughter of said Susanna and do this = phi?uy/her heirs and assigns forever/the same negro girl Hannah as the property of the said Susanna and her heirs forever. which negre is to remain in my possession till my dece??? then to be the property of the said Susanna Pearce. Given under my hand this sixth day of December eighteen hundred and six and in the thirtieth year of the Independence of the United States of America.
