Robert R. Strutton, son of John Strutton and Alydia Clark, was born in 1825 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He passed away on 3 September 1864 in Graham County, North Carolina and is buried in Jenkins/Santeetlah Baptist Church Cemetery, Graham County, North Carolina.[1]
Robert married Narcissus Nichols on 25 May 1845 in Blount County, Tennessee.[2][3] Robert and Narcissus had nine children. They moved around a bit. After their marriage, they were in Monroe County, Tennessee by 1850 and back in Cherokee County, North Carolina by 1860.
Robert enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 15 March 1862 as a Private in Company G, 59th Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He was home on sick leave when he was ambushed and killed by Kirkland Bushwackers near Ball Play, Monroe County, Tennessee. Sadly, about a year later Robert's son, John, and another teenage boy, Tom Mashburn, were also killed by bushwackers. (For more information on this, see History of the Cherohala: Kirkland Bushwackers
1850 Federal, 1 Jun 1850 - Robert, Narcissus and children John and Nancy are living in Monroe County, Tennessee. With them in the household is Rachael Nichol who may be Narcissus' sister.[4]
1860 Federal, 1 Jun 1860 - Robert is enumerated as a farmer in Cheoah, Cherokee County, North Carolina with his wife, Narcissus, and children John, Elizabeth, Thomas, Amanda, Darcus, Charles, and Rhoda. He owns land with a value of $700 and personal property valued at $500.[5]
