Biography

Family Ancestry

The Thompson's were Scottish Covenantars who originally came from Scotland and emigrated from County Antrim, Ireland. They were Presbyterians who fled from Scotland to Ireland and came to American to escape persecution, oppressive taxes and political troubles. They belonged to the Clan Campbell of Argyll.

John was born in 1698. He passed away in 1779.

According to the "Thompson Family" booklet of 1887, John Thomson and his brother James, originally from Scotland, emigrated from the County Antrim, Ireland about 1735 to Cross Roads, Chester, Pennsylvania and moved to Hanover Township near Derry Church, still preserved and rebuilt in 1886. They were Scottish Covenanters and doubtless worshiped an Derry Church.

From Hanover Township they moved near Harrisburg where John married his second wife Miss Slocum; he then moved to the farm three miles east of what is now Thompsontown, Pennsylvania. He and his two wives are buried in a graveyard one and a half miles east of Thompsontown.

John Thompson came up the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers and landed at the mouth of the river three miles east of what is now Thompsontown. His first wife was Miss Greenleaf (or Greenlea), his second wife Miss Slocum and this third, Sarah Patterson.
