Death of Mr. W G. Trees.

--<>--

We regret to record the passing away of an old pensioner in the person of Mr. William Griffess Trees, who died on Monday, 27th March, at his resid ence, Commandant Hill. Born 76 years ago in the Cinque port of Rye, Mr. Trees came when 5 years old to this State with his parents, and when he was twenty we hear of him as an established boot and shoemaker. Later he married a Miss Hilder, bought land from the Euroka Chap man Estate, and about 56 years ago landed at Euroka Creek and had to chop his way through the scrub to get a footing there, and by dint of sheer industry, got together a com petence and reared a large family in comfort. The late Mr. Trees was a great maize-grower and market gar dener, and he held the proud distinc tion of winning the medal and certifi cate for the best maize in Australia at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1888. He also won many prizes at the local Agricultural Show. He was a great supporter of the local Society, and was a member of the Committee right from the time of its inception until failing health compelled him to resign. He also served several terms as President. The deceased was one of the first batch of alderman elected, and was re turned to the Council with one break for over fifteen years. He was Mayor during the Municipal year 1899-1900. He was also for years a member of the Hospital Committee, a trustee of the Methodist Church, and for many years conductor of the Wesleyan Choir. The late Mr. Trees was married twice. In 1853 he wedded Miss Eliza Hilder, and she bore him thirteen children, of whom ten survive-five sons and five daughters. The sons are- Mr. W. G. Trees (Deep Creek), Mr. Ernest Trees (Austral Eden),Mr. Fred. Trees (Taylor's Arm), Mr. Albert Trees (Sydney), and Mr. Adin Trees (Commandant Hill). The daughters are- Mrs. G. D. Hilder (Toronto), Mrs. G. Bartrim (South West Rocks), Mrs. E. G. Jebb (West Kempsey), Mrs. W. F. Davidson, (Queanbeyan),and Mrs. Ernest Secomb (West Kempsey). His second wife was Miss Rosina Knauer, whom he married some six years ago. The funeral took place at the East Kempsey Cemetery on Tuesday, 28th ult. The cortege was a very long one, residents being present from all parts of the district. The Deputy mayor and aldermen walked in proces sion in front of the hearse, and the pall-bearers were Messrs. A. C. Sutherland, James Jeffery, George Piggott, and J. H. Betts. The funeral service was a most impressive one and was conducted by the Rev. T. Ellison, assisted by Mr. Woodhouse. The burial arrangements were carried out by Mr. C. Walker.

I am William Griffess Trees (1) great grand daughter.

Jemima Turnbull (Trees) was WG Trees' sister not his daughter. This can be confirmed by comparing the NSW BDM records for birth of children to Griffess and Elizabeth Trees/Tree, and William Griffess and Eliza (Hilder). Children of Griffess and Elizabeth were: William G, Sarah, Alfred, Lois, Martha, Eleanor, and Jemima. Children of William G and Eliza were: Elizabeth, Eliza, Eleanor, Elizabeth, Emma, William G (2), Ernest (my grandfather), Lina, Rhoda, Alfred, Albert, Walter, and Effie. I am not a very active on Wikitree so I will leave this for someone else to correct if they would be so kind. Narelle Grant (Bowden)
